ArcheAge Chronicles

System requirements and performance

The official spec sheet is short and unusually specific: it tells you the frame rate and resolution each tier targets, which makes it easy to know where your machine lands.

The Steam spec sheet for ArcheAge Chronicles is one of the more useful ones in the genre, because it states the target rather than just the hardware. Both tiers assume 1080p with upscaling set to Quality mode.

The two lines that matter

SSD required. Not recommended, required. An open-world Unreal Engine 5 game streaming a continent from disk will stutter on a mechanical drive in a way that no settings change fixes.

100 GB. That is the install footprint at launch. It is not small, and it is worth clearing before launch day rather than at 3:00 PM PST.

The GPU tiers are also a bigger jump than they look. The minimum is an 8 GB card from the RTX 2060 SUPER / RX 6600 class; the recommended is a 12 to 16 GB card. That is a wide gap, and it reflects the difference between Low and High settings at 1080p, not a difference in resolution.

What "upscaling Quality" means for you

Both presets assume upscaling is on and set to Quality. That means the game is rendering below 1080p and reconstructing the image, which is standard for modern engines and not a sign of a badly optimised build.

Practical consequences:

  • Do not turn upscaling off on a minimum-spec machine. You will lose more frames than you gain in sharpness.
  • Higher upscaling quality costs frames. If you are chasing 60 FPS on a mid-range card, dropping the upscaling preset is the first lever, before lowering settings.
  • The frame targets are targets. 30 FPS at Low on the minimum spec is a floor, not a promise for crowded fights.

16 GB is the floor, not the comfort zone

The recommended spec doubles memory to 32 GB. An MMO holds a lot of players, effects and UI state at once, and the difference between 16 and 32 GB shows up in cities and large fights rather than in an empty field.

Laptop and handheld reality check

A 100 GB SSD requirement plus a 12 GB VRAM recommendation is desktop-shaped. If you are on a laptop, the number that matters is the GPU's VRAM and its power limit, not the model name. A laptop 4060 is not a desktop 4060 Ti, and the recommended tier assumes the desktop card.

If your machine sits between the two tiers, expect to run Medium settings at 1080p with upscaling on Quality, and to drop to Low in crowded fights. That is a reasonable place to be for an Early Access MMO.

Before launch day

A short checklist that avoids the most common first-night problems:

  1. Free the disk space. 100 GB plus headroom for patches.
  2. Update your GPU driver. Unreal Engine 5 titles are sensitive to driver versions.
  3. Install on the SSD, not a secondary hard drive. The requirement is not decorative.
  4. Set the game to fullscreen or borderless windowed deliberately. Alt-tabbing behaviour differs between them.
  5. Expect a first-launch wait. XLGAMES has acknowledged a black screen on startup that can take five to ten minutes to clear on some machines. Troubleshooting covers it.

If your machine is below the minimum

The honest answer is that this is not a game that scales down gracefully. A 100 GB SSD requirement and a DirectX 12 GPU floor mean older integrated graphics are out, and the minimum GPU is a discrete card with 8 GB of VRAM.

The one upgrade that changes the most per dollar is the GPU, because the CPU floor (i5-10400 / Ryzen 5 3600) is modest by modern standards. If you already meet the CPU and memory floor, a GPU upgrade moves you from the minimum tier to something comfortable.

If you want to know which settings to touch first once you are in, settings and performance covers the levers that actually move frame rate in this kind of build.
